La Vie: A Masterpiece of Modern Living

Designers Keller Chen, Howard Huang and Lara Li's Award-Winning Creation

La Vie, a residence designed by the talented trio Keller Chen, Howard Huang and Lara Li, is a testament to modern living. This unique design, which won the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2019, is a perfect blend of artistry, functionality, and innovation. The design, inspired by the architectural volume and green plantation of the exterior, is a masterpiece of minimalist modern living.

The designers have cleverly used the building's multiple openings to link the exterior and interior, creating a seamless flow between the two. The design concept is minimalist modern living, enhanced by the use of textural masonry material to add an artistic touch. The residence's unique properties include a deliberate maintenance of interactiveness between levels 2 and 3, allowing light to flow freely in the spaces and highlighting the grandeur of the living room.

The TV wall, with its natural texture and pattern of masonry materials, adds to the grand quality of the living room. The back wall to the sofa, complemented by the light-color flowing-texture marble flooring, imbues the public area with rhythmic energy and a sense of artistry. The dining area, with its wooden table and chairs and grey-color artificial marble benchtop, exudes elegance, especially when complemented by white-color cookware.

The design's realization is a testament to the designers' technical expertise. The double-height at the front section of the plan allows light between levels to converge, illuminating the interior and opening it up. The multi-level spaces are divided into the level 2 public area and the private area in the level further above. The public area consists of a living room, dining area, and kitchen linked with open-planning, with ceilings in different levels posed as invisible demarcation.

The design's functionality is evident in the installation of hidden cabinet volume. The lower section of the TV wall in the living room is a slotted shelf to accommodate audio-visual equipment, extending the white storage cabinet into the living room as a visual continuance. The large-area full-height windows bring in light, making the light-color space seem even brighter. The sheer verticality of the TV wall of natural masonry material on the elevations surface and flooring, the naturalistic texture flows across the surface seemingly in river-like and rhythmic motion.

Despite the challenges of designing a residence that reflects the accumulation of human life and the consideration of the use and comfort of the overall environment, the design team successfully widened the space by removing excess compartments. The combination of two side windows into one led to natural light brightening and enlarging the space. The needs of the dweller were considered, with the designer raising the floor and planting green plants on in and out, creating a leisure residence.

In conclusion, La Vie is a masterpiece of contemporary modern living. The multi-level design with a sky-light well of double-height volume guiding flood of light while connecting with the exterior natural elements, complemented by a color narrative, has brought a sense of comfort into the interior. In the white-color based space, color has been strategically articulated in furniture and decorative pieces, charging the space with visual tension and creating an artistic portrayal of a minimalist modern dwelling.
